Appleby Archaeology was formed in early 1998 with the aim of encouraging local interest in practical field archaeology. We meet regularly each month during the winter to hear lectures on subjects of general archaeological interest. During the summer we visit local sites.
We produce a quarterly newsletter and do our best to keep members informed about opportunities to get involved in local archaeology
Our membership includes professional archaeologist and over the years we have surveyed and dug at numerous locations in the Appleby area - in particular on Brackenber Moor which preserves a wide range of prehistoric features. No experience is required in order to become involved in this work as we are able to provide all necessary training
Recently we were fortunate to be awarded a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to involve the Appleby Community in a wide-ranging project to research the early history of the town
Apparch's monthly Lectures are held in the Supper Room of Appleby Market Hall. The Market Hall is situated a few yards up from the Tufton Arms Hotel beside the Moot Hall. It is accessed through a pair of double doors at the end of a broad covered walkway between shops.
The Supper Room is on the first floor up the stairs immediately to the left. A lift is available if required.
Roadside parking is usually available in the Market Square outside the Hall. This is a Disk Zone during the day but parking is free in the evenings when we hold our Lectures.

Apparch publishes quarterly newsletters and all but the most recent are available from the archive. Newsletters contain lecture and visit reports alongside details of news and events. If you are looking for information on a particular topic the Newsletter archive also provides a keyword search facility.
In its early days Apparch hosted several one-day conferences. The Conference archive contains collected papers for some of these.
